Italian Stock Regulator Extends Short Selling Ban Until Feb. 24

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

Italy’s stock market regulator, or Consob, said late Wednesday it has decided to extend the short-selling ban on financial stocks until Feb. 24.

The ban was first implemented on Aug. 12 as the financial market turmoil was hammering financial stocks across Europe. After being extended several times since then, it was due to expire Jan. 15.

In a press release, the regulator said that similar measures have been adopted by France, Belgium and Spain.

The regulator said that the ban could be lifted or changed in the future depending on market conditions.
